Translation

Then, seeing the people of Dhritarashtra's party standing arrayed and the discharge of weapons about to begin, Arjuna, the son of Pandu whose ensign was a monkey, took up his bow and said the following to Krishna, O Lord of the Earth.

Philosophical Significance

Core Meaning

This verse marks the moment before action when Arjuna sees the opposing army ready and feels the weight of what is about to happen. Taking up his bow shows he is prepared to do his duty, but speaking to Krishna shows he needs clarity and support before acting.

Philosophically, it points to the inner turning point everyone faces: external pressure can trigger deep doubt and moral questioning. The outward battle is also an inner battle of values, attachments, and fear.

Arjuna’s choice to pause and address a higher guide teaches that true readiness includes self-awareness and wisdom, not just physical preparedness. It reminds us that asking for guidance is part of courageous action, not weakness.

Life Application

  • When you face a difficult decision, stop and look clearly at the situation before rushing into action.
  • Prepare practically for what you must do, but also seek honest advice or reflect on your deeper values first.
  • Treat conflicts as opportunities to learn about your attachments and choices rather than only problems to solve.

Reflection Question

When I feel pushed to act, do I first check my inner reasons and seek needed guidance?
