Translation

Greater is their trouble whose minds are set on the unmanifested, for the goal of the unmanifested is very hard for the embodied to reach.

Philosophical Significance

Core Meaning

This verse says that people who fix their minds on the unmanifest, formless reality face greater trouble. The formless goal is hard to reach for beings tied to a body and senses. Trying to be purely detached from names and forms can create confusion and inner struggle.

Philosophically, the teaching points out a practical truth: the human mind is shaped by sense experience. A direct leap to an impersonal absolute needs very strong inner discipline. Without that, efforts to renounce the world can bring anxiety, frustration, or spiritual stagnation.

The verse encourages a path suited to our human condition. For many, a personal, accessible form of practice (love, duty, or devotion) offers steadier progress and less inner conflict than trying to grasp the formless at once.

Life Application

  • Start with simple, body-friendly practices: short daily breaths, mindful actions, and devotion (chanting, prayer, or service) rather than forcing total withdrawal from life.
  • Reduce sudden, harsh renunciations; practice gradual detachment by noticing desires and gently choosing responses instead of reacting.
  • Use concrete supports (a teacher, a sacred text, a community, or a chosen image/name) to steady the mind toward the deeper goal.

Reflection Question

Am I trying to force a sudden escape from life, or can I take small steady steps that fit my current situation?
