Translation

The fourfold caste has been created by Me according to the differentiation of Guna and Karma; though I am the author of it, know Me as non-doer and immutable.

Philosophical Significance

Core Meaning

This verse says the fourfold social order was created based on people’s natural tendencies (guna) and their work (karma), not simply by birth. It points to a practical way of organizing life according to qualities and actions.

It also says that the creator stands apart from action. Although the divine is the source of these roles, the divine remains unchanged and not attached to doing. In other words, the supreme is the silent witness beyond activity.

Spiritually, the teaching asks us to see ourselves first by our nature and duties, not by fixed labels. It invites us to perform our work faithfully while understanding that our true self and the divine are beyond roles and results.

Life Application

  • Notice your skills and interests and choose work that fits your nature rather than simply following inherited labels.
  • Do your duty well, but let go of the need to claim all the credit; see yourself as an instrument doing what is needed.
  • Treat others by their qualities and actions, not by rigid social tags; avoid judging people only by outer labels.

Reflection Question

Am I acting from my true abilities and duty, or from an identity I feel I must protect?
