Translation

Having seen Thy mouths fearful with teeth blazing like the fires of cosmic dissolution, I know not the four quarters, nor do I find peace. Have mercy, O Lord of the gods, O abode of the universe.

Philosophical Significance

Core Meaning

Arjuna sees the Lord's cosmic form as many fearsome mouths with teeth like burning fires. This image represents how the true nature of reality can feel overwhelming and destructive to our small, comfortable views.

His reaction — losing direction and peace — shows a natural human response when deep truth breaks our sense of control. Instead of pride, Arjuna turns to humility and asks for mercy, admitting he cannot bear this vision alone.

Spiritually, the verse teaches that awakening can be frightening because it dissolves old identities and safety nets. The wise response is not to harden against the fear but to seek compassion, guidance, and inner steadiness.

Life Application

  • When a truth shakes you (bad news, loss, or a sudden insight), stop, breathe, and allow yourself to feel disoriented instead of reacting immediately.
  • Ask for help: pray, speak to a trusted friend or mentor, or simply request inner strength and kindness toward yourself.
  • Use simple grounding habits — walk, steady breath, routine — to regain direction while you process the change.

Reflection Question

What truth am I avoiding, and how can I ask for help or mercy in facing it?
