Translation

When the seer beholds no agent other than the Gunas and knows that which is higher than them, he attains to My Being.

Philosophical Significance

Core Meaning

This verse says that a true seer understands that all doing comes from the three gunas (sattva, rajas, tamas) — the qualities of nature — and not from a separate, independent ego. By seeing actions and impulses as products of these forces, the seer stops identifying personally with every urge or outcome.

At the same time the seer recognizes something higher than the gunas: the divine, steady presence that witnesses and is untouched by the changeable qualities. When one lives with this clear inner witness and devotion to the higher reality, one reaches the Divine Being.

The teaching is about shifting identity from being the small doer to being the aware witness and connecting that awareness with God. This frees you from blame, pride, and constant emotional reactivity.

Life Application

  • When you react, pause and notice the feeling or thought as a quality of nature (restless, dull, clear) rather than “me.” This creates space and reduces automatic reactivity.
  • Cultivate a short daily practice of quiet witnessing (silently observing breath or sensations) to strengthen the sense of the inner seer beyond changing moods.
  • Offer results and effort to the Divine through simple prayer or intention, reminding yourself that actions arise in nature while you remain steady and aware.

Reflection Question

Can I notice the next strong emotion or desire as a passing quality, and not my true self?
