Translation

The foods that are bitter, sour, salty, overly hot, pungent, dry, and burning are liked by the Rajasic and are productive of pain, grief, and disease.

Philosophical Significance

Core Meaning

This verse names foods that excite the senses: bitter, sour, salty, very hot, sharp, dry, and burning. These kinds of foods tend to inflame the body and mind and are favored by a passionate (rajasic) temperament.

When the stomach and senses are agitated, the mind becomes restless, worried, and easily disturbed. That inner unrest leads to more pain, sadness, and physical imbalance, which in turn makes clear thinking and steady practice harder.

Spiritually, the verse teaches that what we eat affects our inner state. Calm, steady attention and compassion grow more easily from foods that support balance rather than stimulate excess.

Life Application

  • Limit very spicy, overly salty, fried, or heavily processed foods; notice how your mood and sleep change after eating them.
  • Choose fresh, simple, warm, and nourishing meals (fruits, cooked vegetables, whole grains, mild spices) to support clarity and steady energy.
  • Practice mindful eating: eat slowly, without screens, and observe how different foods affect your body and mind.

Reflection Question

Which foods make me feel calm and clear, and which leave me restless or heavy?
