Translation

Arjuna said, "O Madhusudana, how can I fight in battle with arrows against Bhishma and Drona, who are worthy of being worshipped, O destroyer of enemies?"

Philosophical Significance

Core Meaning

Arjuna is confused and filled with sorrow. He cannot bring himself to fight warriors like Bhishma and Drona because they deserve respect and worship. This shows a deep inner clash between his duty as a warrior and his love for elders and teachers.

Philosophically, the verse points to the tension between personal attachment and moral responsibility. Respect for others is good, but when it stops us from doing what is right, it becomes an obstacle. The teaching invites us to see roles and duties clearly and to act from higher purpose rather than from fear or affection alone.

At a deeper level, it asks us to rise above personal feelings that prevent righteous action. One can honor and respect people while still fulfilling necessary duties, especially when those duties serve justice or the common good.

Life Application

  • When a decision feels blocked by emotion, pause and list your duty or goal separately from the people involved. Act from principle, not only from feelings.
  • Show respect and kindness, but don’t let reverence stop you from doing what is right or necessary for others’ welfare.
  • Practice doing your work with detachment: focus on honest effort, not on pleasing everyone or avoiding discomfort.

Reflection Question

Am I avoiding a necessary action because I fear hurting someone I respect?
