Translation

Better it is, indeed, in this world to accept alms than to slay the most noble teachers. But if I were to kill them, even in this world, all my enjoyments of wealth and fulfilled desires would be stained with their blood.

Philosophical Significance

Core Meaning

Arjuna says it is better to live modestly and depend on alms than to kill or betray noble teachers. He values moral duty and respect for those who taught him more than material gains.

The verse shows that wrong actions, especially against wise or good people, taint whatever we gain. Pleasure or wealth won by harming others carries inner stain and guilt that spoils true happiness.

On a deeper level, teachers stand for higher values and conscience. Violating those values damages the self: outer success cannot make up for the loss of integrity and peace.

Life Application

  • When success asks you to compromise your principles or hurt someone you respect, choose integrity even if it means giving up comfort.
  • Protect and honor mentors, values, and community standards; seek alternatives rather than taking a harmful shortcut.
  • Before important choices, pause and ask whether the outcome will bring long-term peace or only short-term gain with lasting regret.

Reflection Question

Would I rather lose comfort than lose my integrity or betray someone I respect?
