Philosophical Significance
Core Meaning
This verse warns that when unrighteousness grows in society, the moral strength of the family breaks down. The text uses "women of the family" to point to those who often carry and teach household values; if the home loses its moral center, the next generation loses clear guidance.
"Varṇa-saṅkara" here refers to a breakdown in the social order caused by the loss of steady values and roles—not a judgment on people. Philosophically, the verse teaches that the health of society depends on steady ethical practice in everyday family life. When people stop living by dharma (right duty), confusion and weakened character follow.
Spiritually, the remedy is inner discipline and consistent example. Protecting and practicing simple moral habits at home—truthfulness, self-control, regular spiritual practice—keeps the chain of good conduct unbroken and supports a healthy society.
Life Application
- Be the example: live your values openly at home so children and others learn by seeing, not just by being told.
- Keep simple daily practices: truth, calm speech, self-restraint, and small shared rituals (prayer, reading, mealtime discipline) to strengthen family character.
- Guard the home environment: limit harmful influences (sensational media, greed-driven choices) and encourage study, service, and meaningful conversation.
Reflection Question
What small, steady habit can I start today to strengthen the moral tone of my home?
